We caught up with Stephanie Lipsey-Liu co-owner of Charles Lea Opticians, to learn what's working well for them and how Bird is helping.

Charles Lea Opticians

Hi Stephanie, tell us a little bit about yourself and Charles Lea Opticians.

My co-owner Aarti and I have always wanted to own our own practice so when the opportunity to take over Charles Lea Opticians came up, we both jumped at the chance.

Having both locummed here in the past and seen how much the patients love it here and how amazing the staff were, cemented that it was the right choice.

100% 5 star reviews and a great reputation, what's working so well for you?

The staff here are amazing. They're kind, friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The patients really pick up on this.

The second thing I think is the frame choice. We have worked really hard on creating a great range of frames for patients to choose from and we are often complimented on this.

We have a lot of elderly patients who don't want to be in classic styles and are excited to try new colours and styles.

What do you think has been the biggest challenge for the Optical Industry in 2024?

I think one of the problems is online glasses sites. It promotes badly fitting glasses and often poor vision if the centration is off. We aren't able to compete with their prices and it makes it look like we are over charging. It's about time we started charging properly for appointments so we don't have to make glasses quite so expensive to make up for the loss on the eye test. Don't get me started on the NHS fees either.

What trends have you or your team noticed going into 2024?

People are definitely more adventurous with their frames now.

How did you first hear about Bird Eyewear?

We first saw Bird at 100% optical and were immediately drawn to the stand.

What made you decide to stock Bird Eyewear?

We love the style of the whole range and the fact that they're made from eco-friendly materials. The glasses recycling service was also a factor as we'd had nowhere to send old frames for the last few years.

What has been your favourite aspect of working with us?

So far everything! We've not had any problems and everyone is friendly and helpful.

What’s your favourite Bird design?

I have the Tawny frame and it's great for my small face! I rarely find glasses that suits me.

How has working with Bird helped your business?

The main thing is the ability to recycle specs on the fabulous cardboard box! Everyone comments on it as we weren't able to accept glasses for recycling for a few years.

What do your customers say about us?

They love the styles and shapes and the fact that they are eco friendly. They're also super happy about the cork cases.

What would you like to see next from ourselves?

I think the current range is excellent, I'm honestly not sure what I'd add!

What do you say to someone looking to stock Bird Eyewear?

Definitely do it. People love it and the more eco friendly ranges, the better.

Tawny | Olive

Stephanie's favourite frame is the Tawny. It's clear to see why it is such a popular design. Made from our plant-based bio acetate.
