Masters of Materials
From Nature : For Nature
Based in the greenest city in the UK; nature is at the heart of what we do and we aim to reflect this in every pair of Birds and the impact they have, whether that’s creating new innovative materials or planting our very own forest.
Bio-plastic
Our Bio-acetate is an eco-friendly version of plastic, it's made with plant cellulose rather than crude oil.
- Sustainably sourced base from wood and plants.
- Hypoallergenic and safe for your skin.
- High strength and flexible.
- Created using traditional techniques.
Recycled Aluminium
Aluminium is one of the most recycled, and most recyclable materials on the planet. Nearly 75% of all aluminium produced is still in use today. Aluminium can be recycled directly back into itself over and over again in a true closed loop. Recycling aluminium saves more than 90% of the energy required versus producing new metal.
We source the recycled aluminium in our frames from Hydro based in Norway. This is because Norway has a great renewable energy infrastructure that sources consider the associated CO2e value for aluminium sourced from Norway to be significantly
lower than aluminium sourced from other locations.
Sustainable Woods
Our wooden frames are built from ethically sourced wood or Bamboo. Bamboo has been used as a building material for thousands of years. It’s renown for its ability to grow fast, as well as having immense strength which means it’s used as scaffolding in some parts of the world (Fun fact: bamboo is actually a type of grass). We also use maple, beech and sandal wood. All our woods are from suppliers verified by The Forestry Stewardship Council who promote the safe management of forests.
Castor Beans
Birdies are made from processed castor beans, a new (and old) natural polymer that is lighter than aluminium and strong enough to be used in vehicles. The low-density material is 10 times stronger than the plastics in car bumpers, and 13 times stronger than common bioplastics. Castor plants grow extremely fast and do not require pesticides or chemicals to thrive.
Cork
Cork is a renewable material, a cork tree can be harvested once every 9-14 years during its 200-300-year lifespan, supplying cork for many generations. The process of harvesting cork has small ecological footprint, and we love it because it's both recyclable and biodegradable.
Packaging
We've been refining and redefining our packaging to have minimal impact on the environment since we started. Our newest addition is a hexagonal delight to our beloved nest box.
We've teamed up with Flexi-hex and use their incredible paper sleeves to keep our Birds snug inside
their boxes as they journey to find new faces.
Our boxes and packaging go above and beyond in more ways than one... they are made from over 85% recycled paper pulp while all virgin paper is ethically sourced.
A Global Product
In order to create each pair of Birds, materials are sourced from all over the world including; Norway, UK, Germany, China, Portugal, Singapore and Italy (to name a few).
In order to create Better Eyewear for a Better World, we work exclusively with ethically-minded teams who take pride in both their people and their production.
Every pair of Birds represent a combination of both Global expertise, and the very best sustainable materials the World has to offer.
It's not over
We are continuously developing new sustainable materials that will continue to transform the eyewear industry.
Each positive step we take, pushes us further on our mission for Better Eyewear for a Better World.
